Pongal (பொங்கல்)
The most important Tamil festival. A four-day harvest festival celebrated with immense joy and gratitude. Each day has its own significance:
Bhogi Pongal — the first day — old items are burned and homes are cleaned symbolizing letting go of the past.
Thai Pongal — the main day — the newly harvested rice is cooked in a new pot outdoors until it overflows symbolizing abundance. The overflow is greeted with shouts of Pongalo Pongal.
Mattu Pongal — cattle are bathed, decorated with flowers and bells, and worshipped as partners in agricultural prosperity.
Kaanum Pongal — families visit each other and young people seek blessings from elders.
Thai Poosam
A sacred day dedicated to Lord Murugan. Celebrated with Kavadi processions at Murugan temples. Devotees carry ornate structures on their shoulders as an act of devotion and penance.
